On Your Own Today

Our first full day at the convention saw everyone going in different directions.  With so many activities we just wound up taking in different events.  For example;  the Lindens and Doyles went on the tour to Louisville, Wayne and Sue concentrated on the tour class for their Fordor sedan and Andy took in a tour to a distillery.
The tour to bus tour to Louisville would take us to the Louisville Slugger bat factory, a river boat lunch cruise and finally a tour of Churchill Downs, the home of the Kentucky Derby.  The bus took us to the front door of the bat factory where a huge LS bat greeted everyone.  Inside we were saw a movie about the baseball bat in the modern day, which was very interesting.  We were a little disappointed that they didn’t have any segments on the important events in the recent Red Sox World Series efforts.  Oh well.  We did get to have a little fun though by being able to have our picture taken in a simulated batter’s box, where Mike,  Jordan and I all used an official David Ortiz bat.  That was cool.
The tour of the factory process to make a bat was very interesting.  They use maple and ash trees for the bat and they can get about 80 bats out of a single tree.   The actual making of a regular (non major league) bat only takes 30 seconds.  Making Pro bats takes longer.
The lunch cruise was fine, the food was OK, and the scenery from the deck was pleasant.  Our final stop was the Churchill Downs where visited the museum and toured the track itself. What an impressive facility.  Lots of history and many were surprised to learn how many races are run each season.  600.
Wayne attended the Touring Class judges meeting and got the information he would need and his instructions for the day of judging.  He and Sue then spent time cleaning the Model A for judging.
Andy was on his way to a distillery tour.  I’m not 100% what the tour consisted of, but Andy seemed very happy this afternoon.  Really, he did say he had a good time on the tour.
The evening activity was a Welcome banquet.  Our group was seated towards the back of the hall, but turned out to be a good thing when they opened up the buffet line and we were first to reach it.  The entertainment was provided by the Moron Brothers who kept everyone laughing with their “mountain’ humor.
The good thing – Miles driven today 0
